6 Tips From Kickstarter on How to Run a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign

crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ crowdsourcing/ Designcrowd/ fundraising/ fundraising clone script/ fundraising software/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script
Kickstarter is an invaluable resource for those looking to turn their idea into reality, but launching a campaign on the platform can be a fraught exercise. Success requires more than just enthusiasm and an awesome product; unless you have a clear strategy for raising money on the platform, you'll likely miss your goal and walk away with nothing but raw nerves.

Luckily, you don't have to create a campaign in the dark: There are plenty of comprehensive guides and tip sheets outlining effective crowdfunding techniques, and now, Kickstarter is offering up advice of its own.

On the heels of its new relaxed rules for raising money on the platform, Kickstarter has published a "Creator Handbook," which it describes as a "one-stop guide to designing a solid Kickstarter project, presenting it effectively, finding backers, and delivering on your plans."

"We’ve talked to countless creators about what they learned from their campaigns, what it’s like to run one, and the best ways to help a project succeed," Kickstarter said in a blog post introducing the Handbook. "It all adds up to a mountain of collected knowledge about how to make an idea thrive."

And so, without further ado, here is a roundup of useful tips and best practices for creating a successful campaign, courtesy of Kickstarter. (You can read the full Creator Handbook here).

1. Keep your campaign under 30 days. While your funding round can last anywhere between one and 60 days, a longer campaign doesn't necessarily mean people are going to give more. In fact, statistically, projects lasting 30 days or fewer enjoy the highest success rates, according to Kickstarter: "Shorter projects set a tone of confidence and help motivate your backers to join the party."

Who Needs Kickstarter And IndieGoGo? Crowdfund Yourself

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ crowdsourcing/ indiegogo/ indiegogo clone/ indiegogo clone script/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script
After a crowdfunding site made big promises to filmmaker Stuart Acher, then reneged on those promises, he was left with two days until his film #Stuck would launch with no crowdfunding in sight. So, he and his partners at FilmBreak built one from scratch.

FilmBreak believes that it is simply too expensive to use existing platforms and the there’s not enough value exchange. Most platforms charge a 7 to 12% fee to host a crowdfunding campaign but offer little to no marketing help or discoverability. While it is arguable that these platforms do not help you enough, FilmBreak is aiming to reduce costs and increase marketing and distribution help, at least for filmmakers.

Crowdfunding, as many Forbes articles point out, is a wildly successful and perhaps world-changing phenomenon. Here are a few stats from CrowdSourcing.org 2013 report as well as the fees from the big players directly.

  • There were 452 active crowdfunding platforms globally (as of April 2012)
  • An estimated 1 million campaign were funded in 2012
  • Platforms raised $2.7B in 2012, an 81% increase from 2011
  • Industry expected to grow to $5.1B in 2013

Kickstarter clone fee for successful projects is 5%, Amazon fee is 3-5% on top of that. IndieGoGo gives you two options: Flexible funding is 9% if goal is not reached, 4% if goal is reached, then 3% for credit card processing. Or, you can choose Fixed funding where you, as the creator set the goal. You will only get funds if the goal is reached: 4% if goal is reached, 3% for credit card. FundAnything: offers the same deal as IndieGoGo. CrowdTilt has a 2.5% fee if the goal is reached plus 2.5$ for credit card processing.

Bank Lending to Small Business Slips, Crowdfunding on the Rise

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform
New York-based crowdfunding platform Kickstarter broke its previous record for the most any single project has raised in April with Pebble, a watch that synchs with your smartphone. So far (the funding round is not over yet), the watch has raised more than $9 million from over 61,000 backers. And while alternative funding appears to be on the rise, loan approval rates at banks across the nation have slipped, according to the most recent analysis from Biz2Credit, an online marketplace that matches small and medium sized businesses with lenders.

Banks with more than $10 billion in assets approved 10.6% of loans in April, down from the 10.9% approval rate in March, according to the report released today from New York-based Biz2Credit. That also marks a continuing decline from January and February of this year, when big banks approved 11.7% of small business loans.

Smaller banks, or those with less than $10 billion in assets -- recently the bright spot in an otherwise challenging lending market for small businesses -- approved 45.9% of loans last month, down from the 47.6% in March and February this year. Approval rates at credit unions also dipped slightly to 57.4% in April from 57.9% the previous month.

10 Signs You're Not Cut Out to Be an Entrepreneur

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ crowdsourcing/ Entrepreneur/ entrepreneurs/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform
About half of Americans dream of opening their own businesses, according to a recent survey by the UPS
Store, but with 50% of small businesses failing within the first five years, how do you know if you're an entrepreneur ... or a "wanna-preneur"?

"When we go through recessions and people lose their jobs or are offered buyouts, many decide it's their impetus to launch their own company," says entrepreneur and business coach Daniel C. Steenerson. "But just because you can start a business doesn't mean you should."

Before you take the leap, Steenerson suggests taking an honest inventory of your skill set. He offers these ten clues that you're not cut out to launch a business:

1. You can't stand the heat.
Before you jump into self-employment, Steenerson says you need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.

"Every day you'll need to try something new for the first time," he says. "Growth happens at edge of comfort zone. If you're unwilling to go there, you may not be cut out for being an entrepreneur."

2. You're on the quest for quick cash.

While profit is the result of successful business, it shouldn't be why you are in business, says Steenerson, who in 1997 launched Disability Insurance Services, a provider of disability insurance products, to fill a gap in the marketplace.

"You start a business to solve problems and serve others," he says. "If you do that the cash will follow, but it can take time."

3. You have professional ADD.
Starting a business isn't about chasing the latest shiny thing; it's about picking a dream and staying with it even when times get tough.

"Being an entrepreneur requires unwavering laser focus," says Steenerson. "If you don't have patience and are unwilling to push through the tough times, launching a business might not be for you."

Should Every Startup Do A Kickstarter Campaign?

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ fundraising/ fundraising clone script/ fundraising software/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script
Awhile ago, I was sitting beside the CEO of a red-hot startup that had recently launched a campaign on Kickstarter.

It seemed like an odd move given there seemed to be a lot of of interest from VCs, so I asked the CEO why use Kickstarter Clone. The answer was quick and simple: “good marketing”.

It caught me by surprise but now I can see why using Kickstarter make sense, even by startups who are within the radar of VCs.

In many ways, Kickstarter is a no-brainer. If a campaign works, it generates a lot of buzz and media coverage, as well as cheap capital.

If a Kickstarter doesn’t work, it’s still a good exercise because it forces a startup to develop a public narrative.

Crowdfunding Advice You Won't Find In A Rule Book

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ fundraising/ fundraising clone script/ fundraising software/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform

I feel for future campaign creators who want to crowdfund their big dream and are trying hard to get it right. There they are, diligently reading advice and unearthing content, the substance of which can vary considerably and sometimes patently contradict a sure-fire tip they read just a second ago.

If you feel your research has led you to feel strapped into the seat of an unmanned roller coaster, the most generous explanation for this is that crowdfunding script is nuanced and complex, and there are few across-the-board answers to be found. (The not-so-generous explanation is that, while the Internet is a wonderful place to share, it’s also a hotbed for hotheads who have been given a very wide berth to spout with impunity.)

So, who and what is a crowdfunder supposed to believe?

First, know going in that crowdfunding can’t be reduced to a binary system of ones and zeros. The best way to decode for yourself how to make crowdfunding work for you is to bone up on the science but focus on the art.

Want to Raise Money With Crowdfunding? Consider These Tips

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ fundraising/ fundraising clone script/ fundraising software/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform
The law that President Obama is set to sign this week is expected to unleash a wave of crowdfunding. That promises to give some startups access to capital they wouldn't have had otherwise, but it could set up unwary entrepreneurs for a headache.

Crowdfunding is a way of raising capital that involves getting small amounts of money from a large number of investors. A new law, called the JOBS Act, changes the formerly donate-to-my-cause-for-a-tote-bag industry into a popular way for small companies to raise the cash in two ways: It allows businesses to raise money from investors in exchange for a piece of their company (equity) and it allows non-accredited investors (regular Joes and Janes like your neighbor and Grandma) to sink their own cash into startups.

If you have been quietly sitting on a business idea that you are convinced will change the world, but you have been struggling to get money to get started, this is great news. But, beware, eager entrepreneur-to-be. If you rush without caution, you could be digging your own grave. Check out these tips on how to tread safely in this new era of equity crowdfunding script.

1. Refrain from the desire to raise $1 from a million people. "Entrepreneurs should not go into this unless they have worked out, 'What is the maximum number of people I can deal with?' " says Sara Hanks, a securities attorney, and a cofounder of CrowdCheck, a startup that plans to help entrepreneurs access capital and protect their investors when the law is fully implemented. At this point, Hanks is working out of a home-office in Northern Virginia, but she has plans to open an office in Alexandria, Va.

Map out an investor relations plan. It should include how and when you are going to communicate with investors and respond to their queries. What's more, let your investors know what to expect. Otherwise, managing the relations with dozens or hundreds of investors will become overwhelming. It "risks being really distracting and very hard to manage," says Michael Greeley, general partner in Flybridge Capital Partners, a venture-capital firm based in Boston. "If you ask any public-company CEOs, their biggest gripe about the job is investor relations."

How to Raise Cash With Crowdfunding

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ fundraising/ fundraising clone script/ fundraising software/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform
Crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo attract hobbyists and wannabes, but they can also net real cash for those who use them strategically. With savvy profiles and targeted campaigns, some aspiring entrepreneurs are even raising amounts in the five or six figures. Here's how they do it.

Sam Miller was so sick of not being able to find jeans that fit that he decided to start a business to solve the problem. He and his partner, Leona Liu, spent nearly two years studying how they could create a company that would deliver custom-made, U.S.-manufactured jeans at a $60 price point. They sketched out a plan for Chicago-based Civali, sourced the technology they needed and then ran into a common entrepreneurial problem: no money. At the same time, they had no interest in having "investors breathing down our back," Miller says.

The two found the kick in the pants their business concept needed from the crowdfunding website Kickstarter. They launched their funding campaign in July 2011, eventually surpassing their original goal of $29,000 and raising more than $47,000 from 404 backers.

Aspiring entrepreneurs are increasingly jumping onboard with sites like Kickstarter clone, IndieGoGo, peerbackers and ChipIn. Now, as the concept becomes more well-known, users have become savvier about creating interesting profiles, targeting their audiences and promoting their offerings. Some are even managing to raise funds in the five and six figures.

The poster boy for successful crowdfunding is Scott Wilson, who worked on his LunaTik watch design as a pet project while running his Chicago-based design consultancy, Minimal. Wilson, a former creative director for Nike Watches, conceived a wristband that would hold an iPod Nano so the device could function as a watch. He'd heard buzz about Kickstarter, but his employees scoffed when he suggested a campaign for the LunaTik design in November 2010. Wilson had the last laugh, though. In 30 days, he far surpassed his goal of $15,000: He ended up raising nearly $1 million to develop his innovative design, the largest amount of money ever raised on Kickstarter.

"People get excited about it," says Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler. "They're not just buying the thing--they want to help make it happen. They feel like they get a greater piece of it."

When those creative ideas solve a popular concern or problem, all the better. Houston-based LuminAid Lab raised more than five times its $10,000 goal to develop its solar-powered inflatable light during a 40-day campaign on IndieGoGo in November and December of 2011. U.K.-based eMakershop, meanwhile, raised nearly $160,000 on IndieGoGo for its 3-D printer concept.

Kickstarter and the three rules of long tail

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ fundraising/ fundraising clone script/ fundraising software/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform

Kickstarter, the poster child of the reward-based crowdfunding industry, is quickly becoming a household name.

Part of what has made Kickstarter so successful is its ability to tap into the long tail — a concept outlined by Chris Anderson in a 2004 Wired article.

The long tail has allowed niche products to flourish in the internet age. Consider, for instance, the resurgence of vinyl records, which have been made nearly obsolete by tapes, CDs, and digital distribution. Vinyl sales are at their highest since 1997, largely thanks to the ability of consumers to make clear that there is still demand for the medium. Indeed, the Universal Music Group has been so intrigued by the resurgence that it’s launching a re-pressing service powered by crowdfunding script.

Kickstarter, as Max Macaluso and David Gardner of the Motley Fool recently reminded us in the video below, is almost an inevitability of the internet, a service that perfectly positions itself to profit from the long tail.

On Crowdfunding Sites, Age Doesn't Matter

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ fundraising/ fundraising clone script/ fundraising software/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform
For many young, first-time entrepreneurs, tapping parents for startup capital is the closest they'll come to landing investors. But what do you do if the bank of mom and dad can't or won't subsidize your brilliant business idea? Consider crowdfunding.

Websites like Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, and PeerBackers follow a crowd sourcing business model, wherein members sign on as backers and supply the capital necessary to start a business or product. In return, these investors typically receive tangible rewards like special access to a screening, a T-shirt or a sample of the proposed product.

Last year, when Sam Gordon, 27, and his business partners used Kickstarter clone script to raise cash for their Menlo Park, Calif.-based startup -- a smartphone stand maker called the Oona -- he offered to hand over early prototypes of the device to investors who gave a minimum of $25. The move served two goals, says Gordon: the Oona raised more than $130,000 through the site and they got a treasure trove of beta testers (just under 4,000) to try out the device. “We had the idea for our product, but we didn't have enough money to go and start making it and selling it,” Gordon says. “We also wanted to see if people would like it.”

Though Gordon found success, plenty of aspiring entrepreneurs aren't so lucky. In 2011, 46 percent of projects listed on crowdfunding sites failed to reach their stated goals, according to data from Massolution, the research and advisory arm of Crowdsourcing.org, which tracks the category.

The good news? Age tends not to be an issue among crowdfunding investors. "Young people have proven they are able to raise money like anyone else," says IndieGoGo's CEO and co-founder, Slava Rubin. "The key for anyone is to have a good pitch, be proactive and find an audience that cares."

Kickstarter's New Rules for Entrepreneurs

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ fundraising/ fundraising clone script/ fundraising software/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform
Kickstarter, the popular crowdfunding site for creative projects, is taking steps to make budding entrepreneurs more accountable. They've put into place several new rules designed to prevent creators from promising a product they can't deliver.

The goal, Kickstarter says, is to help prevent entrepreneurs from over-promising and disappointing backers by not delivering, like some popular projects have been accused of. By forcing submitters to think through the challenges and be transparent about current progress, they're discouraging unrealistic projects and elevating the creatives who have the skills to ship product as promised and turn their dreams into reality.

To date, Kickstarter says it has raised more than $311 million to fund more than 30,000 projects.

Want to get your business going on Kickstarter Clone ? You'll have to follow these new rules:

1. Identify risks and challenges.

Kickstarter has added a new section to the project page called "Risks and Challenges." Here, you'll list the potential problems involved in seeing your piece through to completion. Are raw materials hard to find? Is there a lot of handwork involved? Do you need permissions you don't already have?

Once you identify the problems, you need to counter with your ability to solve them. Have you successfully completed a similar project? Do you have alternative material options? What's the back-up plan?

This section is about selling yourself -- not the product. Prove to people that you're up to the challenge and your backers will have more confidence you'll be able to weather the challenges ahead.

Crowdfunding Success in 5 Easy Steps

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform
Crowdfunding isn't easy. Some projects fail because there isn't a place in the market. Other campaigns fail because they aren't far enough along in product development to convince people to jump onboard. And some fail simply because they don't have enough planning or strategy in place before they launch.

When Canary launched our Indiegogo campaign we set a goal of $100,000. We met that threshold before lunchtime on the first day and by the time our campaign ended 34 days later on August 26 this year we had raised over $1.9 million and became the most successfully funded campaign in Indiegogo history.

Here are our top 5 recommendations for crowdfunding success:

1. Clearly define your product and your goals :

Many people have amazing ideas but go into crowdfunding platform without fully defining their goals ahead of time. Are you building a single product, a group of products, a company, or is this just a fun side project? You will be in a better position to open up and present yourself to "the crowd" if you know and can articulate your goals. Spend the time to develop your brand or craft your bio prior to launch so you're not scrambling to figure it out when you open yourself up to the eyes of the internet.

2. Tell a story about what you can do for others :

People care much more about themselves than they do about your idea. This means that simply telling people about the amazing product you're building won't lead to a successful campaign. You need to create a story around your product. This story should weave itself through your video, your project description, your images, your updates -- everything. Your focus needs to be on how your product can fit into someone's life in a meaningful way. Resist the tendency to lead with tech specs and feature lists. Make it about people, not about you or your product.

10 Top Crowdfunding Websites

agriya/ crowdfunding/ crowdfunding platform/ crowdfunding script/ fundraising/ fundraising clone script/ fundraising software/ Kickstarter/ kickstarter clone/ kickstarter clone script/ sf platform

In her book Cash From the Crowd, Sally Outlaw, founder and CEO of crowdfunding website peerbackers, reveals the secrets of funding your business with help from colleagues, peers, family, friends and even perfect strangers through a crowdfunding campaign. In this edited excerpt, the author offers details on some crowdfunding platforms that offer entrepreneurs the opportunity to generate funds for their new venture.

New crowdfunding platforms launch literally every day, so I'm only citing a few select ones that, in my experience, have the best track records, have been around long enough to build traction and a good reputation, and can be used to fund businesses. There are many reputable platforms, however, and a directory of crowdfunding platforms.

Reward :

Indiegogo. Originally launched with a focus on film, Indiegogo pivoted to include funding for literally anything and is becoming known for financing personal and cause-related campaigns such as that for the bullied bus monitor, which raised over $700,000. It accepts all projects without review. As Indiegogo says on its website, "Our platform is available to anyone, anywhere, to raisemoney for anything." While its success fee at 4 percent is 1 percent lower than most websites (which charge 5 percent), it does charge one of the highest fees in the industry -- 9 percent -- if you don't meet your goal.

RocketHub. Initially launched with the arts in mind, it expanded to include science, education, business and social good projects. It gained traction in the sciences with its annual SciFund Challenge, an online effort to fund science projects. It also launched a partnership with A&E Networks through which some select projects will be chosen to receive extra support from the joint initiative.

Peerbackers. Consistently recognized as one of the top crowdfunding websites in the industry, peerbackers, which I co-founded and run, focuses on funding entrepreneurs and innovators. The platform has hosted thousands of creative, civic and entrepreneurial projects from around the world and recently expanded to include young entrepreneurs ages 13 to 17 through partnerships with student organizations. After seeing such a high industry failure rate for crowdfunding projects, peerbackers launched Crowdfunding Academy to offer education and support to those who want to crowdfund.

Kickstarter. The most well-known of the crowdfunding websites, Kickstarter clone focuses on creative endeavors including design, the arts (film, publishing, music), gaming and technology. While Kickstarter can't be used to fund businesses per se, it does accept products and has had some remarkably successful campaigns, including about 50 that have generated over a million dollars in funding. Kickstarter "curates" its projects, meaning it has a rigorous submission process, and if you aren't approved to post, it can be quite disappointing.
